Our Programs

1. Washington AI Policy Forum

We work toward a state that leads the nation in making "responsible AI" the default, not the exception. How do we balance rapid tech innovation with the protection of Washingtonians’ rights, labor, and environment? The Washington AI Policy Forum is RAW's premier advocacy and convening initiative, bridging the gap between emerging AI technologies and public-interest policy. We bring together policymakers and legislators, nonprofits and community groups, academic researchers, and industry pioneers, to envision, shape, evaluate, and promote ethical AI frameworks. Through policy briefings, collaborative workshops, and public forums, we translate complex socio-technical challenges into actionable, safe, transparent, environmentally sustainable, and equitable governance.

2. Washington AI Literacy Initiative

In the quickly-changing world around us, communities and individuals risk being disempowered, unemployed, misled, or put at severe risk, and we can expect these risks to disproportionately affect communities that have already been historically disadvantaged by technology. We strive to offer bespoke training courses, learning workshops, & writing tutorials, each directly adapted to your  community's or organization's needs. We want every Washingtonian to have the resources they need to navigate the new and emerging AI landscape. And the best thing? We can hold these in person or remotely, synchronously or asynchronously, for groups of up to 100 people.

These sessions & materials will: (1) upskill your organization, (2) help you adopt responsible AI practices, (3) increase awareness & appreciation of responsible AI values & approaches, & (4) provide materials for self-directed learning. We can instruct on a number of topics, including:

  • AI ethics

  • Compliance with policy from the local to the international levels

  • Responsibly use generative AI, machine learning analytics, AI agents, & AI toolboxes.

  • Effectively, safely, and transparently govern your organization's AI use

  • AI's impacts on Washington's workforce & environment: What can you do about it?

  • How can responsible AI be a boon to your business or organization? What's the business case?

3. The Responsible AI Design Lab

We envision a state where organizations, communities, and businesses use responsible AI as a force multiplier. We work to help your organization distinguish yourselves from others, by focusing on trust, reliability, respect for your workers, and environmental stewardship.

We can collaborate with you to create:

  • Responsible AI toolkits

  • A responsible AI business case & business plan

  • Adopt responsible AI from the "ground up"

  • A strategy for overhauling existing AI policies

  • Responsible AI learning materials for your teams

  • Original research and analysis to ensure your policies are grounded in reality and practicality

  • AI infrastructure, responsibly

  • Networking strategy, to grow with other responsible AI organizations

4. Research Services

Rely on our 20+ years of rigorous, impactful, deliberate research experience. Generate understanding and knowledge about your stakeholders, your team, the responsible AI ecosystem, AI policy, and a wide range of other topics that are central to your organization's responsible AI success. We have experience with quantitative research (including AI & machine learning), qualitative research (including surveys, interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and more), spatial analysis (including GIS, spatial data science, and qualitative GIS), and mixed methods. Our research has been published in top-tier international peer-reviewed academic journals, transformative policy white papers, blog posts & social media, & public non-expert media.
